State Street Bank and Trust Company (Boston, Mass.)
Variant namesThe State Street Bank and Trust Company of Boston was established in 1891 with the founding of the State Street Deposit and Trust Company. The corporation continued to grow by acquiring or merging with several other Boston banks. During the 1950s, it acquired both the Rockland Bank and the Second National Bank of Boston. The Second National Bank of Boston itself was the result of several mergers and acquisitions of smaller banks. Chartered in 1833 as the Granite Bank, it became the Second National Bank of Boston in 1863. In 1903, the Second National Bank of Boston acquired the assets and liabilities of the failed National Suffolk Bank, which evolved from the 1902 merger of the Suffolk National Bank of Boston and the Washington National Bank of Boston.
