Variant namesPope John Paul II (b. Karol Jozef Wojtyla, May 18, 1920, Wadowice, Poland-d. Apr. 2, 2005). He was elected pope in 1978, the first non-Italian chosen as Pope in 456 years. He survived an assassination attempt in May 1981.
