Urban Planning Aid, Inc. (UPA) was formed in 1966 by students and faculty of MIT and Harvard University to support protests by local residents over highway construction and housing issues. UPA continued as an agency funded through the Office of Economic Opportunity and the Community Services Administration and worked with low income community and workplace groups in eastern Massachusetts around issues of housing, industrial health and safety, media access and research. After losing federal funding, UPA affiliated with the College of Public and Community Service of the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1981.
