Fletcher N. Platt was appointed manager of the Traffic Safety and Highway Improvement Department in 1954. Platt reviewed and evaluated product design for the reduction of traffic accidents and crash injuries. He also coordinated Ford Motor Company's activities in the promotion of safe and adequate streets, highways, and related facilities. Platt also worked with governmental, civic, and private agencies engaged in traffic safety and highway improvement programs. In 1956, Ford Motor Company published a book on the conditions of the highway system and driver safety, called Freedom of the American Road. Platt's department was responsible for the distribution of complementary copies of the book.
