Moon, Arthur, 1902-1973.
Arthur Alexander Moon was born in New South Wales in 1902. In the years prior to World War II he established a medical practice in Macquarie Street, Sydney as an obstetrician and gynaecologist. Initially in 1940 he was with the 2/4th Field Ambulance, until, at the request of Colonel "Weary" Dunlop, transferred to the 2/2nd Casualty Clearing Section in 1941. Major Moon together with "Weary" Dunlop and others sailed with the 2/2nd CCS from Suez on the Orcades. They set up the No. 1 Allied Field Hospital at Bandoeng, choosing to stay with their patients despite inevitable capture by the Japanese. Major Moon worked on the Thai-Burma railway. Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Moon died in 1973 at his home in Sydney.

Working on the Thai-Burma railway, Major Moon commissioned four English artists to document the struggle of camp life, the medical treatment and the genius of improvisation.
