Ōyama, Sutematsu, 1860-1919
Variant namesYamakawa was the first Japanese woman to receive a college degree, graduating from Vassar in 1882. She then returned to Japan, married Iwao Oyama, Minister of War, and was involved in women's work, especially nursing, during the war.
