Stephen Samuel Wise was born in Budapest in 1874.
He was one of the foremost leaders of Zionism and Reform Judaism. He was active in the American Jewish Congress, the World Jewish Congress and Zionist Organization of American. He served as a rabbi in New York City from 1893 to 1900. He moved to Portland, Oregon and served as Rabbi for the Temple Beth Israel from 1900 to 1906. He returned to New York and founded the Free Synagogue.
