Pointe de Sable, Jean Baptiste, 1745?-1818

Variously described as a "naigre Libre," and a" free mulattoman", or the "first permanent trader on the site of Chicago." During the revolution he operated in the Northwest and stations along. Lake-Michigan. He lived in Peoria prior to 1783, and in 1780 his goods were confiscated by the British on account of his American sympathies. In 1800 he sold his Chicago property for about $1200, including a house, a horsemill, bakehouse, dairy, etc. As late as 1814 he was living in St. Charles, Mo., with his Indian wife and two children.
