Smith Norton was born in Madison, Maine in 1824 and received the A. B. degree at Oberlin College in 1855. After studies at Anderson and Newton Theological seminaries from 1855 to 1857, he returned to Oberlin to complete his divinity course at Oberlin Theological Seminary, graduating in 1858. He was ordained to the Congregational ministry at Lebanon, Ohio in 1859, whereupon he embarked upon a forty-year peripatetic ministerial career that took him to Illinois, New York, Michigan, and Vermont. Norton lived in retirement in Oberlin (1900-06) and at Albany, Oregon (1906-11) before his death in 1912 at Portland, Oregon.
