"Waud, Alfred R. (2 Oct. 1828-6 Apr. 1891), artist and illustrator, was born Alfred Rudolph Waud in London... Waud emigrated to the United States in 1850, planning to seek employment with the actor and playwright John Brougham, who was then building a theater in New York City. The theater was still under construction when Waud arrived, however, and he was forced to turn to other artistic endeavors. From 1851 to 1852 he worked as an illustrator for the Carpet-Bag, a periodical in Boston, and he divided his time between Boston and New York for the rest of the decade. Around 1855 he married Mary Gertrude Jewett, with whom he had four children... Waud's work as an artist-journalist covering the Civil War is his most important achievement." -- Alfred R. Waud.
