The Boulder County Abstract of Title Company was incorporated on 5 December 1887 by James P. Maxwell, Andrew J. Macky, George S. Oliver and Edwin J. Temple. Once located at 2015 13th St., Boulder, CO., the company celebrated its 100th anniversary in the 1960s. Its title abstract records were begun by Alfred E. Lea, who as County Clerk and Recorder followed his predecessor Thomas Danford's practice of supplying abstracts of title in connection with real estate transactions.
When Lea retired as County Clerk and Recorder, he continued in the abstract business for a number of years. The accumulated records were acquired in 1887 by the corporation formed by the four Boulder pioneers mentioned above. H.C. (Henry C.) Hickman, who became the sole owner of the company in 1936, was the father of the two donors of the collection. The firm became part of the Title Guaranty Company in 1961, then was acquired by Transamerica Corp. in 1962.
