Hide Profile

Charlotte Waring (1795-1867) emigrated to Australia in 1826 on the "Cumberland" where she met her first husband, James Atkinson, who was returning to Sydney. As a teacher, Charlotte had been engaged as governess to the Hannibal Macarthur children. She married James Atkinson on 29 September 1827 and they had three children, Charlotte (b. 1828), James (1830?-1885) and Caroline Louisa Waring (1834-1872), the well-known novelist and naturalist. Charlotte took a major part in Louisa's education, encouraging both her artistic talent and her interest in natural history. After James' early death, Charlotte married George Bruce Barton in 1836.
