Alexandre d'Hesmivy D'Auribeau assumed command of the ship 'Esperance' after the death of the commanding officer, Huon de Kermadec in May 1793. The Esperance and the Recherche had been under the command of Rear-Admiral D'Entrecasteaux, who died from scurvy in July, 1793.
