George W. Beattie, historian and teacher, came to California in 1874. He was a leading educator in Redlands, CA, and later taught at the University of California at Berkeley and in the Philippines where he served as a superintendent of schools and helped organize the University of the Philippines in Manila. In San Bernardino, CA, he was active in community service and historical research. Along with his wife, Helen Pruitt Beattie, he wrote Heritage of the valley (1939) and other publications.
