William Adams was born in Hillsborough County, Ireland, on January 8, 1822. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1842, the same year he married Mary Ann Leach. In 1844 they sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans, and reached Nauvoo, Illinois, by steamboat in April of that year. He spent most of the 1840s working odd jobs from Nauvoo to St. Louis, and in 1849 decided to leave for Utah. In Utah he worked mainly in frieghting and served on several missions throughout Utah and Pennsylvania, and participated in the mission to the San Juan Stake. He was separated from his first wife Mary Ann following his decision to enter into plural marriage. In 1882 he was running a co-op store. Adams died in 1901.
