In December, 1955, several Univac 1103A (also known as the Univac Scientific) users met to form a cooperative organization to exchange programming ideas and develop a standard format and programming language. Original USE members were Boeing Airplane Company, Holloman Air Force Base, Lockheed Missile Systems Division, Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation, and the Remington Rand Univac Division. While the group was originally known as the Univac Scientific Exchange, the acronym "USE" was retained after the Univac Scientific system became obsolete.
