Raymond Joseph Saulnier was born on September 20, 1908 in Hamilton, Massachusetts. He received a B.S. from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1929, an M.A. from Tufts College in Massachusetts in 1931, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1939. He married Estelle Sydney on March 17, 1934. From 1934 to 1938 was an instructor at Columbia University, and from 1938 to 1946 he was an assistant professor at Barnard College and Columbia University in economics. During this same time period he also served as a Research Associate for the Financial Research Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research, from 1938 to 1946. He became as associate professor at Barnard College and Columbia University in 1946, and became a professor at these institutions in 1949. He remained professor at Barnard and Columbia until 1973, when he became Emeritus Professor of Economics. Saulnier also held the following positions throughout his career: Director of Research, Financial Research Program, National Bureau of Economic Research, 1946 to 1954; Consultant, Federal Reserve System, Board of Governors, 1950 to 1952; President, American Finance Association, 1951 to 1952; Consultant, Council of Economic Advisers, 1952 to 1953; Member, Council of Economic Advisers, 1954 to 1955; Chairman, Council of Economic Advisers, 1956 to 1961; Director, Federal National Mortgage Association, 1959 to 1961; Public Governor, American Stock Exchange, 1965 to 1975; Consultant, Department of the Treasury, 1969 to 1977; Chairman, President's Task Force on Low Income Housing, 1970 to 1973; Member, Consumer Advisory Council, Federal Reserve Board of Governors, 1976 to 1979; and Public Governor, American Commodities Exchange, 1978 to 1980. He died on June 23, 1996 in Chestertown, Maryland.
