Erie Maud-Mary Richards was the daughter of Caroline and John Richards. She was probably born in England during 1879 or early 1880, while her family was there visiting relatives on her father's side. Her family then moved to Clio (Mich.), where Erie attended school through the 8th grade. She then began teaching school, eventually teaching in Genesee, Delta, and Isabella counties (Mich.). She attended classes at what is now Central Michigan University, Oct. 1902-1903, 1904-summer 1905, and 1940-1941; Eastern Michigan University, 1916 and 1918; and summer courses at Harvard, 1920. She was still teaching in 1956-1957 and was alive in 1961. (Information from the collection.).
