Lawrence G. Heller was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania in 1905 and moved with his family to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1912 where he attended both grade school and high school in Colorado Springs. He later graduated from Williams College, then studied art at Carnegie Tech and Yale Fine Arts School. Heller became a commercial artist and worked as an actor, set designer and artist for the Alexander Film Company. He married in 1936 and he and his wife built their home in Colorado Springs which was later donated to the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) and became known as "The Heller Center for Arts & Humanities." In addition to his commercial art work, Larry Heller was a veteran of World War II where he worked as a propaganda artist for the Army Air Corps, producing publications, posters and newspaper art. He rejoined the Alexander Film Company after the war and lived in Colorado Springs until his death at age 77.
