Geelong Community Radio 3YYR obtained a licence to broadcast on 100.3FM in 1988. The licence was granted on the basis that the station would provide access to diverse groups within the Geelong community including migrants, Aboriginal people, the elderly, youth, women and people with disabilities. Interviews with Geelong people were regularly broadcast and over 200 audio cassette tapes were produced. Preservation of the tape collection began in 1988. To further that aim, The Geelong Voices Oral History Project was formed in 1991. The interviews are being archived onto compact disk and summaries created. As they are completed, the tapes, CDs and summaries are lodged with the State Library of Victoria and other institutions.
