Weather observer, Tacoma, Wash.; trained in both law and medicine; practiced medicine in Kentucky and later had a legal practice in Washington, D.C.; moved to Tacoma in 1887 where became a volunteer weather observer for the State Weather Service, a branch of the Weather Bureau division of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
