Woman's Suffrage Bazaar Association.

Hide Profile

The Woman's Suffrage Bazaar Association was organized by members of the New England Woman Suffrage Association to raise money for NEWSA's activities. Julia Ward Howe was WSBA's president during the planning for the second bazaar, held December 11-22, 1871, at the Music Hall in Boston (Mass.). The bazaar consisted of three days of entertainment and a week-long fair. Various suffrage organizations sponsored tables with information and publications; there were also tables where such items as clothes, confections, books, and stationery were sold. Raffles were not allowed. Despite competing appeals for aid to those recovering from the Chicago fire, the 1871 bazaar raised between eight and nine thousand dollars for NEWSA's work. For additional historical information, including extensive minutes, see The Woman's Journal, particularly the complete description of the bazaar's offerings in the issue for December 22, 1871.
