Drew (Harvard, B.A. 1863; M.A. 1868) was born in 1843. He went to China in 1865 at the invitation of Robert Hart, Inspector-General of [Chinese] Customs , and became Commissioner of Customs in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. He was appointed by the Kuang-hsü emperor to serve as secretary of the Chinese embassy on Special Ambassador Li Hung-chang's visit to the U.S. and Canada in 1896.
