Adelaide Strong Knox was the youngest of seven children born to Carrie E. Todd and John Jay Knox. Her father served as comptroller of the currency (1872-1884). Raised in New York City, Adelaide Knox attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. In 1908 she married Andre Cheronnet Champollion who died in France during World War I. They had a son Rene. Adelaide Knox later married Auchland Branwell.
