Worked as clerk in wholesale dry goods business in Boston, then in retail dry goods in Concord. Worked with his father first as clerk, then in partnership (J. Brown & Son); took over business following John Brown's retirement in 1880. Over the years, the Browns' store was kept in various locations on Concord's Mill Dam.
