Andrew Jackson appointed Taney to several positions, including United States Attorney General (1831-1833), United States Secretary of the Treasury (Acting, 1833-1834), and Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1836-1864); while studying law at Dickinson College, Roger Brooke Taney became friends with fellow student Francis Scott Key; in 1806, Taney married Key's sister, Anne Arnold Phebe Charlton Key (1783-1855), at the Key family's Terra Rubra estate in Frederick County, Md.; they had seven children together.
