Established in 1899 with a bequest from Jacob Wendell, the Wendell Scholarship is awarded "annually to such students as the College authorities shall deem proper, who shall most excel in their studies...." The Jacob Wendell Scholarship prize is awarded annually to a Harvard College student or students on the basis of scholarship and contribution to the College community and without reference to financial need. The Office of the Dean of Freshmen is active in the selection of the scholar. In 1913 the Gordon Wendell Fund was established, the gift of Barrett Wendell, AB 1877, and his niece, Frances Gordon Wendell. The income of the Gordon Wendell fund is customarily added to the stipend of the Jacob Wendell Scholarship prize. The Wendell family carries on the pleasant custom of giving a celebration each spring in honor of the newest Wendell Scholar to which all living Wendell Scholars are invited. These books are displayed at each dinner; additions to the latest book are expected.
