Jireh Platt, an active abolitionist in Mendon, Illinois, had sons who moved to Waubaunsee, Kansas (otherwise known as the Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony) during the territorial era. One of these sons, Luther, served as a missionary with the American Missionary Association (AMA) and served in the Illinois militia during the Civil War. His sons Dwight and Ferry both attended Washburn College (later University), and Dwight was also a missionary, serving as pastor-at-large for the Congregational church in northwest Kansas, centered in Goodland, Sherman County, among other positions he held.
