Laura Nelson Baker began working in the Unity Settlement House in Minneapolis MN as a secretary (1947-1949), then as an editor of the Richfield News (Richfield MN, 1949-53), and supervisor of the manuscript reading room of Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley (1955-57). She won three awards form the National Press Women: the editorial in a weekley (1952), and the fiction first prize (1953, 1954).

Born to an Iowa farm family in 1911, Laura Nelson Baker wrote children's fiction and nonfiction books, many of which reflected her love for the outdoors.

Laura Nelson Baker was born in 1911 in Humboldt, Iowa. She took courses at the University of Minnesota from 1929-1931 and served as editor to the Richfield News from 1949-1953. She was supervisor of the manuscript reading room at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley from 1955-1957. Since this time she has been a full time author.

Baker has written many books for children, among them, Because of Anne (with Adrien Stoutenberg), From Whales to Snails, and Ground Afire . She has also published short stories and articles for the Christian Science Monitor, Seventeen and American Girl .
