The Reverend James Chapman was pastor of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Perth Amboy, N.J. from 1811 until 1842. Rev. Chapman was also the treasurer of the Episcopal Society of New Jersey for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge and Piety. The Society was modeled after the work of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, the greatest and most important society within the Church of England.
