The United States Navy Galapagos Expedition in March-April 1941, and again in June-July 1942, spent time investigating the possibility of establishing a biological station in the Galapagos Islands. Dr. Waldo L. Schmitt, on special detail with the United States Navy, traveled aboard the USS Mallard to the region. The expedition crew included Captain Sherwood Picking, Captain Freddy Laing, Dr. Blanch, Land Surveyor Ralph H. Ernest, Captain Lynch, W. W. Collins, R. G. Cook, B. E. Rider, and C. P. O. Young. On these trips Schmitt collected crustaceans for the United States National Museum and took water samples in the vicinity of the Galapagos Islands.
