A clerk from Middleboro, Mass., Charles S. Leonard enlisted in the 31st Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers on Feb. 7, 1862, and was mustered into service of the Union army on Feb. 9, 1862. On Aug. 18, 1862, Leonard transferred to the 1st Regiment of Louisiana (Union) Volunteers, enrolling as a commissary sergeant, and on Sept. 8, 1863, he was appointed 2nd lieutenant of Company E. Leonard was discharged July 12, 1865, at New Orleans. After the war, he worked as a special examiner for the Equitable Mortgage Co. in Kansas City, Mo. and later was a resident of Hiawatha, Brown County, Kan.
