U.S. Army officer; graduated from West Point in 1843; stationed at Fort Steilacoom, Wash., 1859; assigned command of the American garrison on San Juan Island, a position he held until Apr. 1860; because of antagonistic relationship with his commander, Gen. William S. Harney was deployed back to Fort Steilacoom; later served in the Civil War.
