Newspaper publisher; Murray published the "Mesilla Times" in Mesilla, N.M. from 1860 to 1862. He advocated for a separate Arizona Territory, and for the Confederate cause. He joined the Confederate States Army in October, 1862. He returned to publishing in Texas after the Civil War. His brother-in-law, Lewis S. Owings, merchant and politician, was active in business in Mesilla, N.M. from 1858. He was secretary and treasurer of the Mowry City Association in 1859, and in 1860 became the first provisional governor of the proposed Confederate Territory of Arizona. Owings joined the Confederate forces during the War and was later a businessman and politician in Texas.
