Cotton farmers, of Honea Path area of Anderson County, S.C.; at various times, these lands were under jurisdiction of Ninety Six District, then Pendleton District, S.C., which was subsequently divided into an area known as Anderson District. Today some of these lands lie in Anderson County and Abbeville County, S.C.; the area where the Kay family settled was called Ghentsville (sometimes spelled "Gentsville"), but the community began to decline as Honea (Honey) Path was incorporated and the Greenville and Columbia Railroad came to town.
