Joseph S. Gans, Sr. built and owned cable television systems in several Eastern U.S. states including Pennsylvania. After specializing in radiotelegraphy with the Infantry Signal Corps during World War II, he attended Hazelton Technical School in Hazelton, Penn. He designed and built the cable system in Hazelton in 1950. In 1954 he applied for the Weatherly, Penn. franchise where he used equipment from Jerrold Electronics Corporation and Entron, Inc. He also deployed the technology of microwave transmission in his cable systems. Gans is one of the founders of Pennsylvania Educational Communications Systems, a member of the Cable Alliance for Education, and has held positions with various associations including the NCTA, the Pennsylvania Cable Television Association (PCTA), Society of Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), and Pennsylvania Edu-Cable. In 1985 he received the NCTA President's Award for distinguished service.
