Jesuit, sociologist, author, and social reformer.

Born in New Jersey in 1908, Fichter entered the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus in 1930 and was ordained in 1942. Since 1947, when he received the Ph.D. from Harvard University, he has been a sociology professor. He was one of the first to undertake sociological investigations of the Catholic Church. A prolific author, most of his writings have explored the sociology of religion. He has also taken part in varied efforts at social reform, most notably as a leading participant in attempts to integrate Catholic institutions in the New Orleans area.
