Bates, James A. (James Allen), b. ca. 1833.
James A. Bates, from the State of New York, entered the volunteer service as private in Apr. 1861, and took part in Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorville, and Gettysburg campaigns. In June 1864 he was appointed 1st Lieutenant of 166th Company, 2nd Battalion of Veterans Reserve Corps, organized at Hammond General Hospital in Point Lookout, Md. He was mustered out August 24, 1865 and later assigned to the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, in Richmond, Va. In May 1866 he was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel.
