Joseph Risk Johnson served aboard the USS Chicago in 1918 during the closing months of World War I. The USS Chicago reported to Submarine Force, and was stationed in the Atlantic. It was during these closing months of World War I that the world was rocked by an international influenza pandemic. In the two years that it affected the globe, it attacked 1/5th of the world's population and killed 500 million worldwide. An estimated 675,000 Americans died during the pandemic.
