Wadsworth family.

Hide Profile

The Wadsworth family played a major role in the settlement of the Genesee Valley, starting with the arrival of James and William Wadsworth in 1790 from Durham, Conn. They acquired and managed vast areas of land, principally near Geneseo and Avon, N.Y. but also in Buffalo and elsewhere. W. Austin Wadsworth, grandson of James Wadsworth, lived most of his life at "The Homestead" in Geneseo but also fought in the Spanish-American War. He was an avid sportsman, co-founded the Genesee Valley Hunt in 1879, and invited many prominent friends to visit the estate over the years. He also was one of the founders of the New York State Normal School, Geneseo, and served on the board of directors of the Wadsworth Library in Geneseo. A nephew, Craig W. Wadsworth, Jr., born in Philadelphia, was a career diplomat who retired to Geneseo in 1927.
