General William Lee Davidson was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1746. His parents moved to North Carolina in 1750, settling in Rowan County. During the American Revolutionary War, he served as a lieutenant-colonel under General Nash. He was promoted to brigadier-general after a battle at Calson's Mill, North Carolina. He died on the battlefield at Cowan's Ford, North Carolina on February 1, 1781. Davidson College in Davidson, North CArolina was named in his honor.
