Dominique-Prosper de Chermont (1741-1798) enrolled in l'École militaire at the age of 12 and became a career officer in the French Army, serving in Germany and in France and rising steadily in rank. About to be named Marshal in 1793, he was forced to surrender at Pondicherry, where he died in 1798.
