Son of Prime Minister Lord North. Colonial governor, university chancellor, linguist and collector of books and manuscripts. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Spent much of his early life in Southern Europe, because of ill health. Received into the Orthodox Church, 1792. Created Doctor of Civil Law by the University of Oxford in 1793. Member of Parliament for Banbury, 1792-1794. Secretary to Sir Gilbert Elliot in Corsica, 1795. First British Governor of Ceylon, 1798-1805. Succeeded to the title fifth Earl of Guilford, 1817. Made director of education in the Ionian Islands, 1820. Founded the Ionian Academy at Corfu in 1824.
