The Carolina Publishing Institute, sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, began in 1993. The institute, held each summer, was comprised of three weeks of instruction, each week dealing with a different aspect of publishing. In the first week, participants learned about editing a manuscript for publication; the second week covered design and production of the actual book; the third week covered marketing strategies. In 1996, an attempt was made to add a fourth week, detailing electronic publishing. The attempt failed due to lack of interest in the new medium.

The institute was geared towards those considering a career in publishing, those already in publishing who wished to learn more, and authors who wanted to better understand how their manuscripts became books. It was meant to be especially helpful to newcomers to publishing and new authors with little or no experience in publishing. In addition to lectures, participants engaged in interactive sessions and took field trips to local publishing and design houses. A participant could enroll in one, two, or all three weeks.

A local Advisory Board was responsible for planning each institute. Doris Betts of the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of English served as advisor to the institute and worked closely with the Advisory Board. The institute's faculty was made up of both local and national players in the publishing industry, authors, educators, and booksellers. Space and staff support were provided by the university's Division of Continuing Education. The institute was last held in 1996.
