Alvan Macauley was born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1872, he received a law degree from George Washington University. Macauley married Estelle C. Littlepage in 1895 and they had three children, the collection of his son, Alvan Jr., is also in the Burton Historical Collection. Macauley joined the Packard Motor Car Company in 1910 as general manager, was appointed vice president in 1913 and three years later was elected president, still retaining the office of general manager, in 1939 he was elected chairman of the board which he retained until his retirement in 1948. Alvan Macauley died in Florida in 1952 at age 79.
