Bowman served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943-1945 during World War II. He was assigned to be the bombardier on the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress in the 15th Air Force, 32nd Bomb Group. Bowman was shot down over Vienna, crashed in Hungary, and died two days later in a German prisoner-of-war camp.
