Wren, James, 1825-
Variant namesBorn in 1825. First commissioned February 22, 1850 as 2nd Lieutenant of Washington Artillery of Pottsville, Pa.; 2nd commissioned January 8, 1851 as 1st Lieutenant; 3rd commissioned August 1, 1855 as Adjutant of 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, 6th Division composed of the Militia of Pennsylvania which included Schuylkill, Carbon and Monroe counties; 4th commissioned June 6, 1859; 5th commissioned September 6, 1859. He left for Washington, D.C. April 17, 1861 and became a part of the "First Defenders" whose duty was to protect the nation's capitol. Wren and his men first formed part of the 25th Pennsylvania Volunteers, with him commanding Company B. Upon the expiration of this group, Wren and nine of his men joined the 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was involved in both of the battles at Bull Run; the North Carolina Expedition of 1862; South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. Wren was honorably discharged on May 20, 1863 at Lexington, Kentucky. He returned to Pottsville, Pa. and Boyertown, Pa., where he went back to his machine business.
