Dr. Edward Manly Royall was born in Edgefield, S.C., and graduated from the College of Charleston and the Medical College of South Carolina. After serving in the coast guard at Sullivan's Island and in the Santee Artillery, he was assigned to duty as assistant surgeon in King's Battalion, Artillery, Longstreet's Corps in 1863 and 1864. In 1865, he was assigned to Haskell's Battalion, Light Artillery. After the war, in impaired health, Royall took up cotton farming at Palmetto Grove near Mount Pleasant, S.C. His wife was Anne Bailey Venning (1827-1920).
