Karn (1930-2001) served in the Korean War with the 36th Combat Engineering Group as both a combat engineer and a carpenter.

He was discharged in 1953, married Lois Engle in 1955, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Karn worked for the University of Wisconsin Center System for thirty-one years and eventually settled in Sheboygan (Wisconsin).
