Mercer, Sid, 1881 - 1945.
Mercer was raised on an Illinois farm and attended Dixon College for two years. He was a baseball writer for the St. Louis Republic and Post-Dispatch when he was hired by the St. Louis Browns as road secretary in 1906. A year later he joined the New York Evening Globe. Mercer was one of the founders and became president of the BBWAA in 1940. He was with the New York Journal-American when he died in 1945. He was posthumously awarded the J.G. Taylor Spink Award by the Hall of Fame in 1969. Source used www.baseballlibrary.com.
